Fleetlands celebrates 70 years of MoD work

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Fleetlands, UK – Vector Aerospace Helicopter Services – UK (Vector – www.vectoraerospace.com), one of the world’s leading independent providers of aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services marked the 70th birthday of the Fleetlands site in Gosport with a fun-filled weekend of celebrations.

Vector Aerospace, which bought the former DARA (Defence Aviation Repair Agency) site from the MoD in April 2008, opened the festivities on Friday 2nd July with an on-site dinner reception for local dignitaries. These included the Mayor and Mayoress of Gosport, Councillors Roger and Jill Allen; the Mayor and Mayoress of Fareham, Councillor Brian Bayford and Mrs Susan Bayford; and the CEO of Gosport Borough Council, Mr and Mrs Ian Lycett.

This was followed by a day of family fun on Saturday for all employees and their families.  The morning saw the large hangars and the training centre at Fleetlands thronged with children of all ages eager to learn about the Sea King, Lynx and Chinook helicopters which are worked on at the site. In the afternoon the focus moved to the Civil Service Sports Ground in Gosport where the numerous activities included an it’s a knockout competition, children wrestling in sumo suits (pictured), bouncy castle, golf competition and a ‘throw the welly’ contest.

The celebrations were rounded off with an announcement by Vector Aerospace that Macmillan Nurses would be one of its corporately supported charities.

Fleetlands’ first steps
In 1940 Fleetlands was known as the RNARY (Royal Naval Aircraft Repair Yard) and the Fairey Swordfish was the first aircraft to be worked on in the Yard in May 1940.  The aircraft was received by road from RAF Grange, which is now known as HMS Sultan.
