UDT Asia 2011 to run alongside IMDEX

Friday, June 11th, 2010

UDT Asia, the international conference and exhibition for undersea defence technology, will next be staged alongside the leading Asian naval show, IMDEX Asia in May 2011.  The move follows consultation between UDT organisers Clarion Events, the Singapore Navy and other stakeholders.

Tim Porter, Managing Director, Clarion Defence & Security, said, ‘UDT Asia was originally scheduled to take place in September 2010 but the opportunity to run alongside IMDEX Asia was too good to miss.  South East Asia is one of the world’s most important regions for maritime traffic.  As a result, security – both surface and undersea – is a top priority.  Bringing together all the latest products and technologies – together with a highly influential conference – under one roof will be enormously beneficial for all concerned.  Both UDT and IMDEX are fully supported by the Singapore Navy and collectively we shall have even greater leverage in attracting senior naval personnel from across the region.’

He continued, ‘The two events last ran alongside each other in 2002 – 2003, creating what was widely regarded as one of the strongest and most successful editions to date.  We have every confidence that the formula will work again.’

UDT Asia and IMDEX Asia will take place at the Changi Exhibition Centre, Singapore from 18 – 20 May 2011.

Innovation and enterprise still thrive at UDT

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

It was a case of standing room only as UDT Conference Chairman Ernst-August Petsch opened the 2010 event at the CCH conference center in Hamburg on Tuesday 8th June. Capt Petsch said that after 20 years – and making its fourth visit to Hamburg – UDT was showing no signs of fatigue but instead was continuing to show that innovation and enterprise were very much alive in the undersea defence community.

The first keynote address was given by Vice Admiral Axel Schimpf, Chief of Staff, German Navy, who said that the world has changed fundamentally, with globalisation potentially having a significant impact on individual nations’ security. He described the sea as ‘the bridge connecting our global world’. He said that while technology had an important role to play in meeting the new spectrum of threats – which included international terror, organised crime, piracy and weapons of mass destruction – there should not be over emphasis on this area, quoting an earlier German admiral who said ‘technique without leadership is purposeless’. Adm Schimpf said that the German Navy’s vision for beyond 2025 was ‘Protect and project’.

Rear Admiral Mark Anderson, Commander Operations, Royal Navy, United Kingdom, said that the asymmetric undersea threat is very real and the days of the deep water anti-submarine operations had largely gone. Today’s platforms were more advanced but fewer.  Furthermore, the cost of producing and laying mines was a fraction of the cost of detecting and neutralising them. Adm Anderson described the submarine as a ‘sea denial weapon’ to scare off the enemy, saying that ‘submarines need to be sinister’.  In terms of priorities for these economically-challenged times, he said that ‘really good torpedo decoys are a must’. Also important were intelligence gathering – with near real-time reporting – and anti-submarine capability.

The need to meet largely unknown future challenges while making every Kroner count was a theme of the presentation by Rear Admiral Andreas Olsson, Director, Naval and Marine Procurement Command FMV, Sweden. He said that an alternative to buying new platforms incorporating all the latest technology was submarines that had significant potential for upgrades over a considerable period of years. He too commented on the increasing need to meet asymmetrical threats, stating that in the future the enemy might not be as well trained or organised as traditional opponents but this did not lessen the risk they posed.

Dr Paul Narum, Director General of FFI, the Norwegian Defence Research Establishment, described the range of undersea defence programmes which the institution is researching. Focusing on the subject of network centric warfare, he said that the majority of people associate this with land and air, but FFI was working on a highly affordable capability for undersea applications.

The UDT 2010 conference continues tomorrow (9th June) and Thursday.

Increased visitor numbers make ITEC 2010 a “big success”

Thursday, June 3rd, 2010

With attendees from more than 50 countries, ITEC, Europe’s premier conference and exhibition for military training, education and simulation technology and services, has been hailed as a major success by many of the companies exhibiting.

Organiser Clarion Events has confirmed attendee numbers of more than 2,900 at this year’s show – a 20% increase on 2009.

More than 150 companies displayed a truly impressive array of advanced training and simulation products, many of which are already in service with military and security forces on land, at sea and in the air.

This year’s show, held 18-20 May at ExCeL, London, had a number of key themes including countering the IED threat, training for medical emergencies and cyber terrorism.

ITEC 2010 also saw an unprecedented record of VIP attendance, with over 40 Senior Guests from Australia; Canada; France; Germany; The Netherlands; Sweden; UAE; United Kingdom and the United States attending Europe’s largest and most established Defence Training and Simulation event.

Opening the event, an address given by Lieutenant General Newton, Commander Force Development and Training, British Army, provided a clear overview of key issues in the training and simulation industry. Particular emphasis was given to a future which focuses on training the individual.

The Innovation Showcase proved once again to be an event highlight, with Antycip Simulation introducing its new behaviour authoring software, “MyBehaviour”. Lockheed Martin demonstrated ‘The Art of the Possible’ using its training and data visualisation solution, “Virtual World Labs” and Cogent 3D based its presentation on ‘Worldwide Dynamic 3D scenes from GIS Source in Minutes’.

Visitors to the exhibition floor also had the opportunity to interact with Presagis’ simulated Unmanned Vehicle System (UVS) ground control station and a fully interactive and realistic helicopter cockpit solution. Among the 47 first time exhibitors, Battlefield Sim used ITEC’s FTE Zone to introduce its brand new patent pending modular urban inflatables to the simulation market, while taking precedence at the Rockwell Collins stand was the new EP-8000 image generator, which creates visual acuity, superior pilot cues and target recognition.

The event was also the selected venue for the signing of an innovative co-operation agreement to boost the effectiveness and resource efficiency of the training undertaken by the United States Navy, the Royal Navy, the Canadian Forces Navy and the German Navy. The first day of the show also saw the settlement of a new cooperative relationship between ITEC and The European Training and Simulation Association (ETSA), who together will work to develop services to the European and International training, modeling and simulation community.

This year, ITEC once again demonstrated itself not only as an excellent opportunity to see the latest developments in the industry and a useful platform to reach the wider training and simulation community, but also as a launch pad for innovative new technology. For instance, the show was used to unveil a pioneering iPad learning programme, developed by LINE Communications for the British Army, which focuses training on how Fire Control Orders are delivered, familiarising the user with command terminology and voice procedures.  The system is due to be implemented by HQ Land Forces later this year.

Reflecting on the event Tim Porter, Managing Director Clarion Defence and Security commented “This year’s show was a great success – the response from exhibitors has been extremely positive while both the conference and exhibition were also very well received. 2011 will usher in a new era for ITEC and we are already looking forward to a new and exciting exhibition in 2011”.

ITEC 2011 will address themes such as Serious Games, which is fast outgrowing the “Games” label and gaining an ever wider acceptance in industry. Vocational Training and E-Learning will also be a key area at ITEC 2011, bringing focus onto the vast number of technicians, managers, and experts - all of whom require ongoing training in a wide array of vocational disciplines. ITEC 2011 will provide the perfect platform for Europe’s armed forces to explore the possibilities these new technologies offer to help them improve the delivery of learning to their personnel.

UDT highlights latest torpedo defence technologies

Thursday, May 27th, 2010

The loss of a Republic of Korea Navy warship to a heavyweight torpedo believed to have been fired by a North Korean coastal submarine has provided a shocking reminder to navies and military planners as to the vulnerability of undefended surface ships to torpedo attack.

On the night of 26 March the corvette Cheonan sank in waters just off the south-west coast of Baengnyeong Island, in the Yellow Sea, after a large explosion blew off the stern part of the ship. Forty-six out of the ship’s 104 crew died as a result.

After a painstaking examination of recovered wreckage, together with analysis of material evidence recovered from the seabed, a Joint Civilian-Military Investigation Group on 20 May announced that a torpedo fired from a North Korean submarine was responsible for the ship’s sinking. It went on to identify the weapon as a CHT-02D heavyweight homing torpedo with a 250 kg high-explosive warhead.

The incident has served as a powerful reminder of the potency of the torpedo – and a re-awakening of the requirement for an effective anti-submarine warfare capability including robust torpedo defence.

Up until the attack on the Cheonan, the last time that major surface warships came under attack by submarine-launched torpedoes was in the 1982 Falklands conflict. This interregnum may have led some observers to conclude that the threat had gone away. However, a quick look at the export of submarines and heavyweight torpedoes over that same period reveals instead that a large number of regional navies, stretching from the Mediterranean, the Gulf and Indian Ocean through to Southeast Asia, are building up a predominantly anti-surface capability founded on modern diesel-electric submarines equipped with state-of-the art command, fire control and sonar systems and advanced heavyweight torpedoes.

In response, defence laboratories and systems houses alike are investigating methods and means to detect and defeat torpedo threats. These include advanced detection, classification and localisation techniques; soft-kill countermeasures (both towed decoys and offboard devices); and hard-kill defences (through the development of advanced anti-torpedo technology).

UDT Europe 2010 will highlight leading edge developments in this area – all of which have now taken on an even greater significance.

Four way co-operation announced at ITEC 2010 for improvements in naval training

Wednesday, May 19th, 2010

ITEC, 18-20 May 2010, ExCeL London, UK (www.itec.co.uk)

ITEC 2010 has been the selected venue for the signing of an innovative co-operation agreement to boost the effectiveness and resource efficiency of the training undertaken by the United States Navy, the Royal Navy, the Canadian Forces Navy and the German Navy.

The four navies have agreed to create a series of formal collaboration arrangements to maximise the effectiveness and resource efficiency of their training and education activities.   They will focus on improving training delivery processes, with an emphasis upon the people and products involved in the planning, analysis, design, delivery, assessment and quality assurance of training and educational capabilities. The agreement will help the four navies to ensure that training is delivered to the user in the right format, at the right time and whenever and wherever it is needed.  Collaboration will take place at sea, on land and at the waterfront.

A key feature of the agreement will be the promotion of innovative methodologies that maximize and exploit each navy’s resources where goals are common, ultimately enhancing interoperability, coalition capability and fighting skill.

The four nations involved so far have agreed that other nations may become partners in this training collaboration in the future where all four accept that such an addition would further enhance and provide added value to the partnership.

Speaking at the event CAPT Kevin Oakes, Director Learning and Development, Naval Education Training Command said “We are delighted to be able to announce this new level of co-operation here at ITEC 2010. We see this agreement as a logical extension of the co-operation that already exists between our four navies and it will help us to establish a deeper understanding of our joint capabilities.  Working together, we will achieve more and all of our people will get the best possible training and education using the latest and best training systems available.”

ITEC is Europe’s premier conference and exhibition for military training, education and simulation technology and services. This year’s conference takes place at London Dockland’s ExCeL Centre from 18-20 May and will be attended by representatives from a number of countries.

How vulnerable is the financial sector?

Wednesday, April 28th, 2010

The dependence of the financial sector for its resilience on other industries such as communications and energy is one of the crucially important topics to be examined at CNi Expo, a new symposium aimed at security and resilience specialists that takes place at London ExCeL on 2nd and 3rd June 2010.

The CNi Expo agenda draws on the experience of Dr John Reid, former Home Secretary and Steve Cummings, Special Adviser to Deloitte’s Security, Privacy & Resilience Group and former Director of the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure, together with feedback from senior risk managers in the financial sector.  Other subjects under the spotlight include the cyber threat and how to mitigate it; the insider threat and the impact of security measures on their behaviour; and planning for resilience in the face of planned and unplanned events. The role of government in delivering security and resilience will also be examined with delegates being able to explore and challenge policies which have a direct impact on business.

Speakers will include Jim King, Interim Director, Group Security and Fraud, Lloyds Banking Group; Rick McConnell, Head of Security, Euroclear; John Smith Director of Resilience, Prudential: and Richard Bridgford, UK Corporate Business Continuity Manager, Santander.
Recognising the importance of industry professionals’ voices being heard, CNi Expo will consist of a series of interactive seminars in which robust debate involving speakers and delegates will be encouraged.

As Steve Cummings warns, “the financial sector probably faces a broader array of threats than any other. As part of the critical national infrastructure it is a potential target for disruptive attacks. It holds vast amounts of valuable personal data and is a focus for criminal activity. The insider threat can cause huge damage. The sector has extended dependencies on other service providers especially in the communications sector. And it faces the same potential crises of fire, flood and flu as the rest of us. It is this complex mix of risks that makes effective resilience management so important in the financial sector” he said.
