Promoting ‘Safety First’ to all areas of the rotary wing community

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

Communicating the latest advice and regulations to improve safety procedures and training across all parts of a diverse European helicopter community is no small challenge. During Helitech Portugal’s first ever conference on 5th and 6th October at Airport Cascais, near Estoril, the European Helicopter Safety Team’s (EHEST) Communications Sub-Group Leader, Duncan Trapp, will be reporting on some of the safety issues facing today’s helicopter users – and the resources they can turn to for help and support, irrespective of whether they are a lone general aviation pilot or a small or large operator.

Mr Trapp is currently Safety & Regulatory Manager for all CHC Helicopter’s European Operations; his role covers looking after the safety of around 100 helicopters and being able to connect with the strategic activity happening in the European safety arena is vital, hence his involvement with EHEST’s essential work.

EHEST is the European branch of the International Helicopter Safety Team (IHST). Both organisations are made up of volunteers from operators, regulators and manufacturers – all with the aim of improving safety within the helicopter community. In 2006, IHST set itself the goal of reducing rotary accident rates by 80% by 2016. In Europe more than 300 accident reports have now been analysed and common themes and trends from these highlighted.

These results have prompted EHEST to focus on a number of key areas on the road to improving the helicopter accident rate. The first area – and one of the Helitech conference’s hot topics – is the introduction of Safety Management Systems (SMS). Although most of the large operators have already deployed SMS, which sees them formalising processes such as regular risk assessments or carrying out safety audits, smaller operators are less likely to have an SMS. Statistically it is smaller operators that tend to experience the majority of accidents across the world. In response to this the IHST has already drawn up an SMS Tool Kit to offer basic guidelines – free to download on the organisation’s website. With the majority of helicopters across the world being operated by companies with between one and five aircraft these types of operations are the IHST’s target audience.

“Helicopters tend to fly in more dynamic environments than most fixed-wing aircraft,” says Duncan Trapp, “so it’s really important that we try to reach out to all areas of the helicopter community – no matter how small – to communicate the latest safety advice, promote training best practice and flag up new ways of meeting regulatory requirements.”

Duncan Trapp will be leading two conference sessions during Helitech. At 2pm on Tuesday 5th October he will be focusing on current training practices and if they should be changed, while at 2pm on Wednesday 6th October he will be discussing why a high percentage of accidents take place during aerial firefighting and the lessons that can be learned.

Helitech’s two-day conference programme is being held within the conference theatre at the show. For more information on the conference visit www.helitechevents.com/programme

Fleetlands celebrates 70 years of MoD work

Thursday, July 8th, 2010

Fleetlands, UK – Vector Aerospace Helicopter Services – UK (Vector – www.vectoraerospace.com), one of the world’s leading independent providers of aviation maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) services marked the 70th birthday of the Fleetlands site in Gosport with a fun-filled weekend of celebrations.

Vector Aerospace, which bought the former DARA (Defence Aviation Repair Agency) site from the MoD in April 2008, opened the festivities on Friday 2nd July with an on-site dinner reception for local dignitaries. These included the Mayor and Mayoress of Gosport, Councillors Roger and Jill Allen; the Mayor and Mayoress of Fareham, Councillor Brian Bayford and Mrs Susan Bayford; and the CEO of Gosport Borough Council, Mr and Mrs Ian Lycett.

This was followed by a day of family fun on Saturday for all employees and their families.  The morning saw the large hangars and the training centre at Fleetlands thronged with children of all ages eager to learn about the Sea King, Lynx and Chinook helicopters which are worked on at the site. In the afternoon the focus moved to the Civil Service Sports Ground in Gosport where the numerous activities included an it’s a knockout competition, children wrestling in sumo suits (pictured), bouncy castle, golf competition and a ‘throw the welly’ contest.

The celebrations were rounded off with an announcement by Vector Aerospace that Macmillan Nurses would be one of its corporately supported charities.

Fleetlands’ first steps
In 1940 Fleetlands was known as the RNARY (Royal Naval Aircraft Repair Yard) and the Fairey Swordfish was the first aircraft to be worked on in the Yard in May 1940.  The aircraft was received by road from RAF Grange, which is now known as HMS Sultan.

Training, safety and aerial firefighting take centre stage at the Helitech Portugal conference

Thursday, June 24th, 2010

Helitech Portugal’s inaugural conference will lift off with a session about how the industry is working ‘Towards consistent simulator standards’, led by the Helicopter International Working Group. As flying hours become increasingly expensive, helicopter operators are investing more than ever in simulators as a reliable alternative. Consequently, not only are the simulators expected to provide basic training in emergency procedures, but also advanced job-specific flying skills such as load-lifting, search and rescue, and confined area work for qualified pilots.

Helitech takes place for the second time in Portugal this year, from 5-7 October at Airport Cascais, near Estoril. The two day conference programme is being held on Tuesday 5th and Wednesday 6th October within the exhibition hall at the show.

Other highlights from the first day of the conference programme include Stephan Brade, from ADAC (Allgemeiner Deutscher Automobil-Club), Europe’s largest automobile organisation, which provides 44 helicopters for urgent medical rescues in Germany. Mr Brade will be igniting debate on the expanding simulation market in a session entitled ‘Whole-crew flight and mission training via simulator’.

There is a growing requirement in the rotary industry for higher performing, more cost-effective helicopters – a need which reflects a more general focus on lowering pollution levels, creating less noise and increasing recyclability of aircraft. Reconciling these demands may appear a difficult task, but manufacturers’ R&D teams, coordinated by the European Commission, are leading the way in rising to the challenge with initiatives such as the Green Rotorcraft project which is tasked with designing improvements such as airframe drag and rotor blade design. At the forefront of discussion on the second day of the conference will be an update on this. ‘Project Clean Sky - the joint European initiative’, will be delivered by Sebastien Dubois from ACARE Europe.

For helicopter companies considering expanding their firefighting capabilities, the final afternoon of the conference offers an insight into how to navigate from contract tendering through to operating. This session will help assess specific customer needs and the infrastructure that is necessary. Speakers include Luis Neto from the National Authority for Civil Protection, Carlos Santos from EMA and José Afonso Pereira from Helibravo.

“This is the first time Helitech has organised its own conference,” said Sue Bradshaw, Helitech’s Exhibition Director. “We have worked hard to address some of the most pressing themes of the European rotary wing sector such as aerial fire fighting; greener and safer helicopters; and simulation. As Helitech is now recognised as an annual opportunity for bringing the helicopter industry together, part of the conference will include a discussion forum, led by experts from across the training spectrum, who will examine the issue of how to plug the recruitment gap left by retiring aircrew as well as some of the issues arising from 21st century training.”

Force Protection Europe launches unique logistics management system for military vehicles

Wednesday, June 23rd, 2010

- Visit us at DVD in the Off Road area, stand no OR-04, for a demonstration -

Force Protection Europe will be showcasing a ground-breaking logistics management system, specially designed for the needs of military vehicles, during DVD from 23 to 24 June (Stand no OR-04). Currently, most logistics management packages have been created to meet the needs of the commercial and military aviation sectors and the ground vehicles market has been awaiting an appropriate solution.
Known as Karrus, the system is a comprehensive closed-loop logistics software management suite with unprecedented capability to optimise life cycle support, increase operational availability and minimise costs.

Easy to learn, easy to use and inexpensive to populate, Karrus analyses complex logistics data, instantly providing the information needed to answer a diversity of key strategic and tactical questions. What parts are needed and how many should we stock? What is our current fleet availability? What repair policy should we adopt for our fleet? How much will it cost to run our fleet for the next 10 years? Addressing issues such as these used to take hours of manual labour, but all that has changed with the arrival of Karrus.

Using input from sources such as deployed Field Service Representatives, Karrus provides a snapshot of fleet status and health, analysing every component to enable informed evaluations and assessment to be made. Available data includes the performance history of components and their ‘repair, replace, stock’ categorisation.

Force Protection Europe Ltd’s Managing Director, David Hind, said: “Military fleet operators around the world have been searching for a system like this. It will radically reduce the man hours devoted to logistics information management, enabling important decisions to be made more quickly and efficiently. It will also help ensure that logistics teams have total clarity of their stock holding and needs, thus cutting down on areas such as over ordering. We have tested the system on our own fleet and it has proven its worth very quickly.”

The system will be promoted on a global basis, including in the United States by Force Protection Europe’s parent company.

Paul Kovarovic, Senior Vice President, Force Protection Industries, Inc., said: “Controlling the ever-changing flow of logistics data and the resulting analysis is complex, but it is also vitally important, especially in these days of budget constraints. The Karrus set of modular logistics tools brings to the ground vehicle sector the levels of access to information previously only available to aviation support.”

UDT showcases industry’s innovative response to customer needs

Monday, June 21st, 2010

The undersea defence technology sector is alive and well. It is also very aware of the needs of the operational community in these financially constrained times and ready to apply innovation to meet the associated challenges. These were the core messages to emerge from UDT Europe 2010, the international conference and exhibition, which was staged in the CCH conference centre, Hamburg from 8 – 10 June.

Visitor attendance was 1520, a 20 per cent increase on last year’s event in Cannes. The show also attracted a record number of military flag officers and senior guests who took up Clarion’s invitation to attend.  Europe was strongly represented with delegates from France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK and from further afield VIP visitors represented Australia, Brazil, Russia and Thailand.

Conference
In the first keynote address Vice Admiral Axel Schimpf, Chief of Staff, German Navy, said that the world has changed fundamentally, with globalisation potentially having a significant impact on individual nations’ security. He described the sea as ‘the bridge connecting our global world’ and said that the German Navy’s vision for beyond 2025 was ‘Protect and project’.

Rear Admiral Mark Anderson, Commander Operations, Royal Navy, United Kingdom, said that the asymmetric undersea threat is very real and the days of the deep water anti-submarine operations had largely gone. He identified the priorities for these times of constrained defence budgets as ‘really good torpedo decoys’, intelligence gathering with near real-time reporting, and anti-submarine capability.

The need to meet largely unknown future challenges while making every Kroner count was a theme of the presentation by Rear Admiral Andreas Olsson, Director, Naval and Marine Procurement Command FMV, Sweden. He said that an alternative to buying new platforms incorporating all the latest technology was submarines that had significant potential for upgrades over a considerable period of years.

Exhibition
The VIPs toured the exhibition floor where close attention was paid to the products and technologies on display. The exhibitors welcomed the interest displayed by visitors from across the spectrum of the undersea sector.

SAAB Underwater Systems President, Thomas Lindén said, ‘We used UDT Europe to show our new submarine based ROV.  We were very pleased with the high quality of the military delegations that visited our stand and with the discussions that we had.  We had meetings with important contacts from European countries and beyond.  We have already committed to exhibit at UDT 2011 in London’.

Rafael used their first ever UDT to launch their new naval communications suite and to showcase their Protector unmanned boat and the Torbuster torpedo decoy. Eyal Ben Zion, Marketing Director & Business Development, Naval Warfare Systems Directorate, said Rafael was having a very good show and was particularly pleased that most of the visiting military VIPs had viewed the company’s offering.

Rotinor featured their high performance diving scooters, which were launched last September at DSEi. Anthony Simmonds, Sales Manager, said, ‘I am very impressed with the level of visitors we have met and the organisation of the show. Our expectations have been exceeded. The Tuesday evening exhibitor networking event in the hall was very valuable and enjoyable - so many shows want you to leave when the visitors go. We had a great DSEi last year and this has been an excellent follow up’.

Sam West of Atlas Elektronik UK said, ‘UDT has given us an excellent platform from which to tell customers about the exciting developments that have been taking place in our company’.

Matthias Baumert, Manager Fairs & Exhibitions / Advertising, Business Development, Atlas Elektronik, said, ‘The show has been really good for us with many visitors. We have already booked a bigger stand for next year’.

Justin Knowles, Director, Maritime Products, Patriot 3 Maritime, said, ‘Most of the interest has been in our Jetboots hands-free diver propulsion system. This is the first time we have exhibited at a show of this type and there has been more interest than I was expecting. Typically officers from the user community have looked at the system and said “I must bring my commander to see this, it’s what we’ve been looking for”. It’s good to have interest like this from operators as well as distributors’.

UDT Europe 2011
UDT 2011 will be staged at ExCeL London from 7-9 June. Tim Porter, Managing Director of Clarion Defence & Security, said, ‘ExCeL combines a London location with the opportunity to demonstrate marine craft and equipment in the dock that forms part of the exhibition complex. Holding UDT there will provide an exciting new dimension for exhibitors and visitors, enabling us to build on the undoubted success of this year’s event’.

CNi debut a resounding success

Thursday, June 17th, 2010

Staged at London ExCeL on 2nd and 3rd June, CNi Expo demonstrated emphatically that this is the new approach to discussing security and resilience issues that the public and private sector has been waiting for.

The event was buzzing from 0800 on Day 1 when former Home Secretary Dr John Reid, Chairman of the Institute for Security and Resilience Studies, chaired a panel discussion involving Gerald Howarth MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary Defence, and Lord Harris of Haringey, Member of the Joint Committee on the National Security Strategy, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Policing, the Home Secretary’s Representative on the Metropolitan Police Authority.

The debate in front of a full house on what security and resilience can learn from defence and vice versa was lively and few punches were pulled. Panellists and delegates exchanged views, creating precisely the climate of interactivity that organisers Clarion Events were seeking when they planned this ground breaking event.

Another thought provoking session that triggered robust debate was whether the real risk, resilience and security priorities for the UK are being overshadowed by concerns about terrorism and climate change. Presenting their views and fielding were Charles Farr Director-General Office for Security and Counter-Terrorism (OSCT); Dr Paul Cornish, Head, International Security Programme, Chatham House and Carrington Professor of International Security; and Angela Robinson, Chairman of the Business Continuity Institute.

The all-important human element was examined in a rigorous session entitled, ‘Your Human Resource: Protecting What You Value’. The panelists were Yinka Balogun, Head of Personnel Security Management, Detica and Chris Hurran, Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure (CPNi), while Siân Harrington, Editor, Human Resource Magazine, moderated.

Tim Porter, Managing Director, Clarion Defence & Security, said, ‘Creating a highly interactive event like this was something of an experiment. However, we are delighted with the response and have an excellent base on which to build for next year’.

UDT Asia 2011 to run alongside IMDEX

Friday, June 11th, 2010

UDT Asia, the international conference and exhibition for undersea defence technology, will next be staged alongside the leading Asian naval show, IMDEX Asia in May 2011.  The move follows consultation between UDT organisers Clarion Events, the Singapore Navy and other stakeholders.

Tim Porter, Managing Director, Clarion Defence & Security, said, ‘UDT Asia was originally scheduled to take place in September 2010 but the opportunity to run alongside IMDEX Asia was too good to miss.  South East Asia is one of the world’s most important regions for maritime traffic.  As a result, security – both surface and undersea – is a top priority.  Bringing together all the latest products and technologies – together with a highly influential conference – under one roof will be enormously beneficial for all concerned.  Both UDT and IMDEX are fully supported by the Singapore Navy and collectively we shall have even greater leverage in attracting senior naval personnel from across the region.’

He continued, ‘The two events last ran alongside each other in 2002 – 2003, creating what was widely regarded as one of the strongest and most successful editions to date.  We have every confidence that the formula will work again.’

UDT Asia and IMDEX Asia will take place at the Changi Exhibition Centre, Singapore from 18 – 20 May 2011.

UDT Asia and IMDEX Asia will take place at the Changi Exhibition Centre, Singapore from 18 – 20 May 2011.
